So a bunch of folks are marching Saturday in the March for Science. As well documented on The Stream this week, the march has little to do with the ideals and origins of science. To take a prime example, proponents of intelligent design were as welcomed at the event as Make America Great Again caps.

Although science was born out of a desire to understand God’s creation, and even though so many advances today are made when scientists — even atheists — assume nature has a design and plan, daring to suggest there’s a real Designer is treated as heresy. “Off with thee, Sky God-worshipping rube!” It’s heartbreaking. 

Young I, The Science Guy

See, I was originally headed for a career in the sciences. Almost all my high school friends became scientists. I majored in math and physical sciences. I worked at two military research facilities. I inhaled Einstein’s Special and General Theories of Relativity like Domino’s Pizza. I lugged huge science textbooks to and fro — uphill both ways — across the University of Maryland campus. 

My favorite joke of the 200,000 or so I’ve composed in my career as a comedy writer was when I described a super-thin supermodel as having “fewer curves than Euclidean geometry.” (I didn’t say it was my funniest joke. Just my favorite.)

My heart raced when I realized that the difference between the quantum notion that merely observing an experiment changes its outcome, and faith being able to move a mountain, is simply a matter of degree. And my life changed when I saw a sunset in the mountains around Saranac, NY and knew that I knew something so beautiful could not be an accident. 

With that history in mind, I have a simple question for the marchers. “Will you stop and take notice of the flowers along your way?” 

If your brain must scoff at intelligent design, can your heart not embrace His creative design?

We read in Genesis that “God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31)

As we look around, who’s to argue?

What is science if not asking nature to reveal her secrets? If you put down the signs, put away the put downs, and listen, she will indeed speak:

But ask the animals, and they will teach you;
    the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
 ask the plants of the earth, and they will teach you;
    and the fish of the sea will declare to you.
Who among all these does not know
    that the hand of the Lord has done this?
  (Job 12:7-9)
