“Web Notables” is a daily feature that highlights articles readers may want to see but might have missed. It is compiled by senior editor David Mills. He thanks his colleague Anika Smith for suggesting two, three, and six.

The Changing Face of the Heartland by Jennifer Bradley for the Brookings Institution. A detailed report of demographic changes and the results in Minneapolis/St. Paul. “The Asian, black, and Hispanic populations in the state tripled between 1990 and 2010, while the white population grew by less than 10 percent. The reports also explained that people believed it because it fit their experience.

The Neuroscience of Despair by Michael Begun in The New Atlantis. The writer, an assistant editor of the journal, examines “the broader trend of uncritically embracing neuroscientific ways of describing our selves and our society” and the possible effects upon society and individuals of doing so.
