A new documentary short film details the meeting and ensuing friendship between two unlikely companions — Bono of U2, and The Message translation author Eugene Peterson.

The film, produced by Fuller Studio and released Tuesday, starts out with several clips recounting how Bono and Peterson met.

The two first interacted in 2002, shortly after The Message was completed. Thankful for the translation, Bono sent Peterson a video message saying, “There’s been some great translations, very literal translations, but no translation that I’ve read that speaks to me in my own language.”

However, astounding as it is, Peterson had never heard of Bono before. As he explains, it wasn’t until a student of his brought him a copy of a Rolling Stone interview with Bono, and he asked “Who’s Bono?”

As the film progresses, Bono and Peterson speak about the Psalms, and a problem that Bono sees in the modern day church. “The Psalmist is brutally honest,” Bono says. “And it’s that that sets the Psalms apart for me. And I often think, ‘God, well why isn’t church music more like that?'”

“The Psalms are not pretty … they’re not nice,” Peterson replies. “I think I’m doing it about as close to the Hebrew as I can get it. But it’s not smooth, it’s not nice, it’s not pretty — but it’s honest. And I think we’re trying for honesty, which is very hard in our culture.”
