Heather Krueger of Illinois was married last weekend. But when the 27-year-old was diagnosed with Stage 4 liver disease about two years ago, she didn’t expect to live happily ever after.

At the time of her diagnosis, Krueger was given only a few months to live — unless she could quickly find a liver donor. It seemed impossible.

“By that time I could really feel my body shutting down,” Krueger told CBS’s Sunday Morning.

But it wasn’t the end of the story for Krueger. Chris Dempsey, a code enforcement officer from Frankfurt, Illinois, overheard someone at work talking about Krueger’s situation. Even though he’d never met Krueger, he got tested to see if he could donate.

“I just said to myself, hey, if I can help, I’m going to help,” Dempsey said.

When Dempsey discovered he was compatible, he took Krueger out for lunch. They agreed to move forward with the transplant.

The transplant was successful; Krueger now has about one half of Dempsey’s liver. She also has something else — a husband.
