In a telephone interview with Stuart Varney of Fox Business’ Varney & Company Thursday, Donald Trump criticized Pope Francis for visiting areas near the Texas-Mexico border and not understanding the predicament the United States is in concerning border control. According to Politico, Varney baited Trump with the question about the Pope visiting the border of Mexico, knowing Trump’s record on immigration and border control.

Trump responded, “So I think that the pope is a very political person. I think that he doesn’t understand the problems our country has. I don’t think he understands the danger of the open border that we have with Mexico,” he said, adding, “Mexico got him to do it because Mexico wants to keep the border just the way it is because they’re making a fortune and we’re losing,” reported Politico.

Pope Francis, who traveled on Feb. 3 to areas ravaged by the war with drug cartels, spoke about the need to end the violence brought by drug trafficking, according to Politico. “The Mexico of violence, the Mexico of corruption, the Mexico of drugs trafficking, the Mexico of cartels, is not the Mexico our Mother wants,” the Pope said.

Pope Francis will begin a week-long visit to Mexico starting Friday.
