Time to Take a Stand: Interview With the Benham Brothers

By Alan Eason Published on September 8, 2015

ALAN EASON — At a recent conference in Dallas I heard the Benham Brothers speak about how they are traveling throughout the country speaking to churches and encouraging Christians in the pews to stand up and be bold in challenging our culture. Their message was so dynamic that I afterwards I rushed out to ask them for an interview. Three segments from the resulting conversation are below.

The Benham Brothers gained notoriety a couple years by having their upcoming show on HGTV cancelled because they stood up at a public rally and said things that got them noticed on network news. According to CNN, “The brothers ran afoul of the network after the site Right Wing Watch published a post about the pair, labeling David Benham as an “anti-gay, anti-choice extremist” for reportedly leading a prayer rally in 2012 outside of the Democratic National Convention held in Charlotte, North Carolina. The site posted a recording of Benham talking to a talk show host about “homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation” and “demonic ideologies” taking hold in colleges and public schools.”

A media firestorm erupted and, although HGTV initially vetted the pair for a new show, Flip it Forward, about helping families purchase homes they could not otherwise afford, the network finally caved to the pressure and “made a business decision” to cancel the show.

When asked about the subject of their speeches at churches around the country, they replied: “We’re trying to speak right into the heart of the church … We’re trying to help people understand two things: 1) their identity in Christ and 2) equally important, to know their assignment.”

Segment One: Time for The Church to Take a Stand

Segment Two: Dad Was a Street Preacher and Said, “I am Going to Break This New Ordinance”

Segment Three: Four Points to Engage the Culture

Following is a playlist, where you can hear all three segments in sequence. It is also shareable.
