The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Were Not ‘Born This Way’

By Jennifer Roback Morse Published on July 5, 2023

This yearโ€™s installment of the annual โ€œPride Monthโ€ went completely over the top. The Los Angeles Dodgers invited the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to their โ€œPride Nightโ€ to receive a โ€œcommunity service award.โ€ After a grassroots backlash, the Dodgers disinvited them. After a different sort of backlash, the Dodgers reinvited them, but gave them the award an hour before game-time, in front of a mostly empty stadium.

The Creed of Our New State Religion

This incident gives us the opportunity to reexamine and ultimately reject several Articles of Faith of the Sexual Revolution. These Articles include:

  • Being โ€œgay,โ€ or a โ€œsexual minorityโ€ is a perfectly normal variation of human sexuality.
  • A personโ€™s patterns of sexual desire and sexual proclivities are inborn, immutable traits.
  • Any psychological disturbance or distress that โ€œsexual minoritiesโ€ experience is due to discrimination and what is called โ€œminority stress.โ€

These Articles of Faith, which occupy a place in modern secular “theology” comparable to the Nicene Creed, lead to these conclusions:

  • The conduct of โ€œsexual minoritiesโ€ is beyond reasoned criticism.
  • โ€œSexual minoritiesโ€ are entitled to the protection of the body of anti-discrimination law that was developed to protect American blacks whose ancestors were enslaved.
  • The rest of us normal people, disparagingly called โ€œnormiesโ€ are required to change our values and behaviors for the comfort of the โ€œsexual minorities.โ€

Letโ€™s reconsider this list, while the recent incident of the LA Dodgers honoring the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is still fresh in our minds.

Move Along, People, Nothing to See Here

First, these men, their costumes and their agenda do not look โ€œperfectly normal,โ€ do they? Neither do the drag queens demanding to be allowed to read to toddlers. Normal people donโ€™t make a practice of dressing in a manner that ridicules other people, and demand to be accepted while they do it. Normal people do not wear garish woman-mocking costumes while claiming to promote โ€œinclusionโ€ and โ€œtolerance.โ€

On the second point, letโ€™s get real. Being a drag queen is not an โ€œinborn immutable trait.โ€ No one is born wearing a full face of white-faced make-up. No one is born wearing outlandish costumes meant to be parodies of religious sistersโ€™ habits. No one is born with an irresistible urge to ridicule other peopleโ€™s religious beliefs. These menโ€™s conduct casts serious doubt on the blanket claim that people are โ€œborn that way,โ€ and therefore in need of the protection of anti-discrimination law.

Not All “Minorities” Are Victims

Which brings us to the final point, the crux of the matter. It is true that drag queens are a numerical minority. It is even true that gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders and all the other โ€œnon-binaryโ€ people combined are a numerical minority. However, the idea that the people in this group are โ€œminoritiesโ€ in the sense intended by discrimination law is laughable.

These men are politically powerful, far in excess of their actual numbers in the population. The California State legislature pressured the Dodgers by giving the Sisters an award of their own. The Los Angeles LGBT Center and the ACLU threatened to rescind their sponsorships of Pride Night. Southern California politicians fell all over themselves expressing their support for the Sisters and their disapproval of the Dodgers. In short, the whole political establishment shamed the Dodgers into re-inviting the โ€œSisters.โ€ The idea that these tasteless drag queens are a politically disenfranchised minority in special need of legal protection is absurd.

They Made This Bed Themselves

Sexual Revolutionaries mock the idea that people make a choice to be gay. โ€œWhy would people choose to be gay when it is a life filled with so much difficulty?โ€ That rhetorical question proves precisely nothing. Every day, people make choices that end up making their lives difficult. The men who are members of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence did not make โ€œa choice:โ€ they made dozens of choices, perhaps hundreds of choices, on a daily basis. Let me ask other gay men: Do you have an irresistible urge to pole dance on a crucifix?

Meanwhile, in less reported news, over 5,000 Catholics assembled in Parking Lot 13 of Dodger Stadium to pray over this whole situation. A large percentage of that crowd was Hispanic men. Arenโ€™t they supposed to be part of a disenfranchised minority in need of special protection? Very curious that the political classes didnโ€™t give them the same attention as they gave the drag queens.

Meanwhile, large numbers of African Americans are disgusted by the hijacking of their civil rights movement to place some behaviors beyond criticism. Being black actually is a fixed, inborn immutable trait. In the immortal words of my friend and former lesbian Charlene Cothran, โ€œYou can tell Iโ€™m black from across the street.โ€

There’s No “Gay Gene”

The โ€œgayโ€ identity is a complex set of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, as well as a pattern of sexual attractions. It would be astonishing if there were a โ€œgay geneโ€ that controls that whole conglomerate, leaving the individual without meaningful decisions to make. I am unwilling to rob people of their moral agency by saying they have no significant choices.

We are all supposed to be โ€œtolerantโ€ because people are supposedly โ€œborn that way,โ€ and hence canโ€™t help themselves. The LA Dodger/Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence uproar proves beyond any shadow of a doubt: โ€œborn that wayโ€ is a cover story to excuse behavior that people would otherwise refuse to accept.
