The Morning Brew: Biden Toots, Baldwin Wants More Cops (on the Set), and a Plea to W Over Russiagate
Happy Tuesday!
Today we’re offering a light blend with a touch of English toffee.
“Long and Loud and Impossible to Ignore.”
“It was long, loud and impossible to ignore,” says Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and apparently she won’t shut up about it. Was she describing a Bruce Springsteen concert? Prince Charles’ snoring? No, apparently when she met with Joe Biden last week at COP26, the American President — how can we say it? — let loose a Swalwell. Gave a toot. Offered a bottom burp.
Now, it happens. They even write books about it.
What’s funny is how Daily Mail reports the incident. Here’s their open:
He is supposed to be committed to reducing emissions – but when President Joe Biden produced a little natural gas of his own at the COP26 summit, it was audible enough to make the Duchess of Cornwall blush.
They go onto describe how Camilla Parker Bowles “hasn’t stopped talking about it.” You’d think a duchess wouldn’t dwell. Can you imagine the scene around the palace? “Charles, did I tell you the President tooted?” “Yes, dear. For the seventh time. Now, finish your scone.”
There’s also this bright note: For a few minutes Meghan Markle isn’t the American causing the royals to crinkle their noses. Good job, Mr. President, giving the lady a break.
Now, if only Joe could catch a break in the polls.
Biden Drops to 38% Approval. Kamala Harris Has Dropped to 28% Approval. Trump Drops Hints About 2024
Joe Biden’s poll numbers have hit a new low. A USA Today/Suffolk poll out Sunday shows Biden at 37.8% approval. His numbers with independents have tanked.
Independents — by a 7-1 margin — say he’s done worse, not better, than they expected.
Kamala Harris fares even worse, polling at 27.8% approval. 51% outright disapprove.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump told Fox News Monday night he’s probably going to wait until after the 2022 midterms before announcing whether he’s running. “A lot of great people who are thinking about running are waiting for that decision, because they’re not going to run if I run.”
Should Trump run? Should MAGA move on? I argue one way, John Zmirak argues it the other in our articles released yesterday. Which side do you fall on?
Biden Considering Shutting Another Pipeline?
Gas prices are surging. Propane is up 50%. Home heating bills are going to skyrocket this winter. Biden was at the G20 last week begging other nations to jack up energy production.
And so what’s Biden doing now that he’s back on American soil? His administration is weighing whether to shut down another oil pipeline in Michigan.
Specifically, Line 5, which is part of network that moves crude and other petroleum products from western Canada. Over half-a-million barrels a day. Canada is mad and Michigan is facing further energy price hikes.
At first, the White House called the story “inaccurate.” Then they turned around and said the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers is weighing the impact of shutting it down. (Just like with payments to illegals being something the DOJ is considering, the administration is hiding behind the Army.)
But it’s still Biden’s administration. And as Politico reports, Joe has a choice: appease the progressives or alienate Midwestern swing voters. Shut down the fossil fuel industry there or give Americans the energy they need. Just to stay warm.
Unfortunately, as we’ve seen since January, it’s always a good bet the Biden administration will leave Americans in the cold.
Former Bush Appointee Calls on President George W. Bush to Condemn the Framing of Trump
A former Bush appointee named Matt Mayer has called on President George W. Bush to put aside his loathing of Donald Trump and condemn the Trump Russia Collusion hoax. Not for Trump’s sake, but to help restore trust in the government.
In an open letter, Mayer lays out the complicity of not only the Clinton campaign, but the FBI, the Obama administration, and even former members of the Bush administration. He explains why Bush is the only former president who could actually help heal the country. He says, in part:
Your judicious use of your voice over the years married with your known dislike of Trump lends you the credibility to speak loudly and clearly on this vital issue.
Silence really isn’t an option, as it indicates you consent to what transpired. I know that cannot be the case. Thus, I implore you to use your powerful voice to condemn what happened and demand reform. If you don’t, our country will continue to fragment and will eventually result in widespread revolts and, God forbid, another civil war.
Someone must lower the ever-increasing political temperature. It is a decision point time, President Bush. If you won’t speak up, who will?
Bush, of course, is BFF’s with Michelle Obama. So the chances of him speaking out are slight. However, we’re approaching the season of miracles. Maybe he will put down the paintbrush and do what’s right.
Surprise! Famed Liberal Actor Who Wants an Increased Police Presence. Except It’s Alec Baldwin, and He Wants It on Movie Sets
How often are you going to hear a famously liberal actor these days call for increased police presence? About as often as you’re going to hear praise for Jesus at a Hollywood award show. However, one such actor is making such a call.
One problem: It’s Alec Baldwin, and he’s calling for the increased police presence on sets to monitor weapon safety.
Yeah, it’s a bit of a joke for Alec to want real police in fake neighborhoods while his liberal pals call for fewer police in real neighborhoods. “Every film/TV set that uses guns, fake or otherwise, should have a police officer on set, hired by the production, to specifically monitor weapons safety,” he posted on Instagram.
On the other hand, we can understand Baldwin’s concern with gun safety on movie sets, given his accidental shooting last month of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
And it’s not the worst idea Baldwin’s ever had. (One nominee: agreeing to host an MSNBC show called Up Late. It lasted five episodes.) However, is this the best use of police resources? How about much more stringent requirements to be certified as an armorer on a set?
Currently, as Sean Spoonts pointed out in Newsweek, movies require a “licensed armorer,” but the license “comes from their union, not any state agency or organization specifically engaged in firearms safety training.“ What they need is a resource Spoonts argues should be involved on TV and movie sets: the NRA.
Baldwin recently signed onto a letter from the “No Rifle Association.” NoRA wants to end the NRA. Perhaps he will want to reconsider his position.
He’s already carrying the burden of Haylna Hutchin’s death. He can spare a future actor a similar burden.
