The Brew: New Speakers, Non-Binary Refs … and Students Majoring in Genocide

By Al Perrotta Published on October 26, 2023

Happy Thursday!

So much is percolating, this Brew might need a cup the size of a bathtub. (Well, you’ve got bathtub gin, why not bathtub coffee?)

Congratulations, Mr. Speaker!

The wait is finally over after 22 days. We have a new Speaker of the House: It’s Mike Johnson of Louisiana.

If you are a Christian and a conservative, this is darn good news. The Stream posted on Johnson’s selection yesterday. But let’s add this, from within The Stream family. Stream contributor, Christians Engaged founder and former campaign advisor-manager Bunni Pounds dubbed the news β€œhuge” … right on top of an email from Stream co-founder and Heritage Foundation honcho Jay Richards also dubbing the news of Johnson’s potential victory β€œhuge.”

You Streamers know that neither Bunni nor Jay are prone to hyperbole. Both understand Capitol Hill and know Rep. Johnson’s heart, skill, intellect and steadfast commitment to conservative principles. Bunni offers her full take in “The Miracle of Our New Speaker β€” Congressman Mike Johnson.”

In his first speech as Speaker, Mike Johnson gave credit where credit is due.

The Latest From the Schools of Hate

George Washington Students Project Genocide

A couple miles away from Capitol Hill at the university bearing the name of the father of our nation, a grotesque display. Pro-Hamas protesters led by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) projected messages Tuesday night onto a GW campus building in support of genocide. What else would you call β€œGlory to Our Martyrs” and β€œFree Palestine From the River to the Sea”? For two hours the messages were projected before campus police shut the projection down.

In the wake of the October 7 massacre, George Washington University President Ellen Granberg had condemned any β€œcelebration of terrorism” on campus, reports the GW Hatchet. Grandberg was targeted in Tuesday night’s projections as well. β€œPresident Granberg is complicit in genocide in Gaza.”

Not incidentally, the building the protesters used to project these anti-Semitic, genocidal messages? The Gelman Library … the Estelle and Melvin Gelman Library. Melvin was a graduate of GW, while Estelle Gelman was a β€œTrustee Emerita” at the school. She was also on the board of the Holocaust Museum. Don’t call it a coincidence that’s the building that was chosen to display a call for the extermination of Jews.

Speaking of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), Florida’s state university system and Gov. Ron DeSantis have ordered a shutdown of the group across the state. This comes after SJP openly celebrates the attack on Israel on October 7.

“Based on the National SJP’s support of terrorism, in consultation with Governor DeSantis, the student chapters must be deactivated,” university system Chancellor Ray Rodrigues said.

Dr. Michael Brown’s new one asks β€œA Question for Those Who Chant β€˜Palestine Must Be Free.’”

Cornell Professor Who Was β€œExhilarated” by the Slaughter and Beheading of Children Takes Leave of Absence

Remember that Cornell professor who with the exuberance of the most rabid fan publicly declared he was β€œenergized” and β€œexhilarated” by the slaughter of 1400 innocent Jews October 7? He’s suddenly taking a break from academia. “Professor Russell Rickford has requested and received approval to take a leave of absence from the university,” Cornell announced.

Tuckered out from partying over the beheading and burning of children? Hard to imagine he is running off to Gaza to actively join the “resistance.”

Transgender Sports Update

The thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, the human drama of gender politics. This is the Wild World of Sports. Some quick hits on the infiltration of biology busting into sports.

The NBA’s 1st Non-Binary and Transgender Referee

The NBA confirms its first non-binary and transgender referee. GQ broke the story Monday of second-year staff referee Che Flores. Che goes by β€œthey.” And GQ goes along. “One piece I was missing for myself was that no one knew how I identified,” Flores told GQ. “Being misgendered as she/her always just felt like a little jab in the gut.”

Trans Runner Whips Competition in High School Cross Country

Always kind of marveled at cross country runners in high school. I couldn’t imagine deliberately running through trails and streets unless chased by a bear. But it didn’t take an aficionado to understand the boys had a natural advantage over the girls. Lung capacity, leg length and strength, etc.

In Washington State, trans-identified male runner Aspen Hoffman led Seattle Academy to victory at the Wesco/Emerald Sound Cross Country Championships Saturday. Hoffman did finish fourth in the Women’s 5000-meter race, but the performance was enough for Seattle Academy to top King’s Christian High School, reports The Post Millennial.

Activist Riley Gaines was not impressed, claiming β€œGirls were warned not to say anything/act up on the podium or else they would be suspended ruining their chances of going to State. Parents were warned not to wear political shirts. A coach got suspended for yelling ‘fair sports for girls.” She also chided Hoffman’s sportsmanship.

By the way, in 2021, Hoffman competed for the men’s team. Post Millennium shares how that went:

As an identified male student-athlete, Hoffman did not finish ahead of 25th place, but as a sophomore female-identified runner, Hoffman did not finish below 22nd place, taking one conference championship victor and three top-two finishes.

Bud Light Tries to Win Back Conservatives by Partnering With UFC

Bud Light has been on the ropes since partnering with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Sales have dropped so fast in some places they couldn’t even give the stuff away. In an effort to recover from that fiasco, Bud Light has signed a multi-million partnership with the UFC.

Fitting, in a way, since Bud Light execs have been kicking themselves harder than any UFC fighter can kick.

UFC CEO Dana White explained his reasoning for partnering with the downfallen brand in a statement Tuesday.

“Anheuser-Busch and Bud Light were UFC’s original beer sponsors more than fifteen years ago. I’m proud to announce we are back in business together. There are many reasons why I chose to go with Anheuser-Busch and Bud Light, most importantly because I feel we are very aligned when it comes to our core values and what the UFC brand stands for. I’m looking forward to all of the incredible things we will do in the years ahead.”

NHL Skates Backwards on Pride Tape

Days after the NHL announced it would not allow players to use so-called β€œPride Tape” on their sticks this season, the league caved to pressure from LGBTQ+ activists. Players can now use the tape during games.
