Today is June 6, otherwise known as D-Day.

Eighty years ago this morning, a massive wave of Allied Forces went ashore in France, storming the beaches near Normandy under withering fire to wrestle Europe from the grip of the Nazis.

We can barely conceive of the hell that greeted our troops on those beaches and cliffs, or the pressure of knowing the success or failure of the entire war effort was in their young hands. We can only marvel at it, and say thanks.

President Joe Biden is in France today, delivering remarks for the anniversary event. Even if he were in top form, he would have had an impossible task, topping President Ronald Reagan’s address 40 years ago.

Said Reagan in part:

Behind me is a memorial that symbolizes the Ranger daggers that were thrust into the top of these cliffs. And before me are the men who put them there. These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. These are the heroes who helped end a war …

… The men of Normandy had faith that what they were doing was right, faith that they fought for all humanity, faith that a just God would grant them mercy on this beachhead or on the next. It was the deep knowledge — and pray God we have not lost it — that there is a profound, moral difference between the use of force for liberation and the use of force for conquest. You were here to liberate, not to conquer, and so you and those others did not doubt your cause. And you were right not to doubt.

…..We are bound today by what bound us 40 years ago, the same loyalties, traditions, and beliefs. We’re bound by reality. … Here, in this place where the West held together, let us make a vow to our dead. Let us show them by our actions that we understand what they died for. Let our actions say to them the words for which General Matthew Ridgway listened: “I will not fail thee nor forsake thee.”

Has what they fought for on their climbs up those cliffs been lost in the last four decades?

No — but you could say it’s hanging by a thread.

Secret Service Agent Begged to Testify that J6 Limo Story Was Garbage; J6 Committee Delayed Testimony to Help in 2022 Elections

The First Law of Snake News is, “Any story about Donald Trump that has the media in an uproar will be proven false, usually within 24 hours.” Add a corollary: “Except when those in power use dirty methods to keep the truth from emerging.”

Take one of the most outrageous tales about the January 6 election protests: The much ballyhooed J6 Committee testimony from former White House staffer Cassidy Hutchinson in June 2022 that Trump tried grabbing the steering wheel of his limo to force the Secret Service to drive him to the Capitol that day. Made for prime-time viewin’, that testimony was. Trumpeted on the mainstream media louder than a mariachi festival.

Yet Liz Cheney and her committee knew the Secret Service insisted it didn’t happen. A few months back, we learned that the Secret Service agent who was driving vehemently denied the story in testimony that the J6 Committee then proceeded to bury.

We learned yesterday that the driver and his lawyers repeatedly begged the committee to interview him right after Hutchinson’s allegation became public so he could refute it. But they refused, letting the story become liberal news fodder without challenge. For months they blew off bringing the agent in to testify — or even alert the public there was evidence that could contradict Hutchinson’s tale — until after the 2022 elections.

Even after the committee interviewed the driver, they buried his testimony — until the Republicans took over and dug it out. This is how the Left treats evidence that would have helped Republicans in 2022, and more importantly Trump in 2024.

Reminder: FBI Torpedoed Laptop Story with Lies to Big Tech

Speaking of election interference, we mentioned on Al’s Afternoon Tea yesterday that the Department of Justice and FBI confirmed Hunter Biden’s laptop is legitimate and the information on it undoctored during testimony in the First Son’s ongoing gun trial. The Twitterverse quickly reminded people that Twitter (now X) told the Federal Elections Commission it suppressed the laptop story because the feds had warned them a Russian “hack” involving Hunter was about to drop.

The FBI knew in 2020 the laptop was the real deal. Have those agents been charged with election interference since then?

Really. A private citizen dropping a few bucks on a stripper to keep her quiet about an extramarital dalliance is “election interference,” but federal agents using the power of the government to shut down down a story damaging to a presidential candidate is not? Can we try putting those agents in a cell at Rikers Island with Liz Cheney, or is that cruel and unusual punishment?

We can chuckle, but that’s not nearly as hysterical as a statement the Biden-Harris campaign made yesterday. All the media ran wild with the story of Trump talking about prosecuting those who abused the justice system to imprison him and many of his staffers and supporters. The horror! And for the Biden campaign to highlight it without the slightest trace of shame or irony? Priceless.

Was the Appointment of Special Counsel Jack Smith Itself Lawless?

Another wrinkle in Trump’s classified-documents case in Florida just … wrinkled. Judge Aileen Cannon ruled she’s willing to hear from outside witnesses on June 21 over whether the appointment of Jack Smith as special counsel was even lawful. She’s allowing 30 minutes of argument from each side about this.

Trump and his fellow defendants say Smith can’t prosecute the case because he wasn’t a federal official confirmed by the Senate, as required. The anti-Trump forces argue that Attorney General Merrick Garland had the authority to grant Smith the authority needed.

During testimony before the House Oversight Committee Tuesday, Garland had trouble answering why he picked Jack Smith as special counsel over countless other qualified prosecutors. He offered some vague platitude about his independence and experience. (Yeah, his experience convicting rising Republican star Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell in a case that was unanimously overturned by the Supreme Court long after it wrecked McDonnell’s political career.)

Amazingly, Garland also suggested he had no idea why the DOJ’s #3 person, Matthew Colangelo, left the department to take a giant career leap backward to join Alvin Bragg’s team in persecuting Trump. Of course he’d deny personally “dispatching” Colangelo to “get Trump.” But to act clueless about why and how his #3 honcho left? Sure.

That’s just like FBI Director Christopher Wray had nothing to say yesterday about the spectacular coincidence of five Democratic prosecutors in five districts suddenly filing charges against Trump all about the same time, with the cases just happening to be perfectly timed for the election. He wouldn’t even concede to Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) the possibility that the coordinated cases are election interference.

A Return to the Beaches of Normandy

If those in charge today won’t punish those who abuse their power to wreck free and fair American elections, then the “boys of Pointe du Hoc” may as well have stayed on the beach, put up umbrellas, and sipped Normandy pinot noir.

If we don’t do our part to preserve freedom today, we’re kicking sand in the faces of those who never made it off the beach.

But in the meantime, we honor their incomprehensible bravery and globe-saving victory.
