Sunny Side: Baptism at the Ballpark

By Nancy Flory Published on July 13, 2024

Last Saturday night, one minor league baseball player baptized another after their team won a game in Nashville, Tennessee.

Wes Clarke, who plays first base for the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, was baptized in an ice bath on the field at First Horizon Park. Outfielder Brewer Hicklen did the honors.

“Had the privilege of being baptized yesterday on the field by one of my good friends @brewerhicklen after our game,” Clarke wrote on Instagram. “Thank you Jesus for this amazing moment in my life. I am incredibly blessed to be surrounded by so many supportive people. It was such a special night!”

For the baptism, Clarke and Hicklen wore shirts that read “Jesus Won.”

In 2022, Hicklen prayed that God would place him on a team where he could make a difference in others’ lives.

“I just asked God, ‘Place me somewhere where You feel like I could have some influence and have some opportunity to make eternal connections with some teammates,'” he recalled to Sports Spectrum. Three weeks later, Hicklen signed with the Brewers.

The Nashville Sounds beat the Memphis Redbirds 4-1 just before the baptism.
