Stream Splashes: November 10-16 in Review
Every week, The Stream rounds up some highlights from the recent news. We call these our “splashes”: everything from insightful commentary on the week’s big events to small inspiring stories you may have missed.
Much buzz has surrounded the recent profession of faith by hip-hop artist Kanye West. We’re fascinated by his outspoken desire to share that faith with the world. In dramatic fashion, the star announced that grace had totally transformed him. He said that it was now his duty to use his platform to glorify God and bring others to Him. Once defined by his vulgarity and opulence, the star said he will use his widely influential platform for better purposes.
This might shock many. But this star’s Damascus-road experience bears great similarities to revivals and awakenings we’ve seen before. Which raises a question. Are we on the verge of another Great Awakening?
Q: Why does God get so offended by something as simple as idol worship at the Vatican? All that about Him being a “jealous God” seems petty and thuggish to some people.
A: Maybe it seems that way to people who’ve never been in love, or been a parent. You know where the word “jealous” comes from? It comes from the Greek word for “zeal.” A zealous lover is a jealous lover. A guy who’s willing to share his wife with different men? He doesn’t really love her. But the story of Hosea shows us that such a metaphor fits exactly God’s attitude toward us. He doesn’t want us “whoring after strange gods” because He doesn’t want us to be … whores. And He doesn’t want priests and cardinals to serve as pimps.
We’ve seen this before. It’s getting old. “Scientists” warn that man is “changing” the climate. The major media push it. Scientists say! They know!
The latest warning comes from 11,258 “world scientists,” declaring a “climate emergency.” The November 5 declaration states “clearly and unequivocally” that humans could endure “untold suffering” if massive changes aren’t made to the biosphere.
Here’s the problem. As usual, most of the signers aren’t climate scientists.
A new horror threatens women and their children. Instead of backstreet abortion we’ve got bathroom abortion. Medical abortions have been around for some time, but a new online provider is making the baby killing pills available by mail.
Not only is it illegal to make these drugs available without a doctor’s approval, but it doesn’t take a truckload of common sense to see the huge risks. All these risks will be taken by the vulnerable woman in a crisis pregnancy.
