Stream Splashes: March 10-16 in Review

Every week, The Stream rounds up some highlights from the recent news. We call these our “splashes”: everything from insightful commentary on the week’s big events to small inspiring stories you may have missed.

 

“Don’t worry, it’ll be painless,” I remember my mother saying, “He’ll be made comfortable and gently drift off.” I loved Bennie. I didn’t want him to be put down.

Sure, I knew he couldn’t run around and play anymore, but I also know I could hold him and tell stories to him. Mom talked to me about the cost and the burden and the enormous stress Bennie was placing on the family in his state. “It’s for the best,” she said. “Best for him, too.” The man in the white coat nodded.

As assuredly as the day turns to night, this is the road we are now on, but not for dogs. For people. This is the course being chosen.

About two weeks ago, one of my students sent me a well-written and carefully argued essay. It was also plagiarized. One-hundred percent, from the opening line on. My student had downloaded another student’s paper from the Internet.

Now we learn that a large group of prominent Americans — well-known actresses, business executives, college coaches — have been accused of paying huge sums of money get their children into elite universities. The U.S. attorney for Massachusetts blames “the widening corruption of elite college admissions through the steady application of wealth, combined with fraud.”

Why do students cheat? Why do parents commit fraud? Idolatry.

An Ohio teenager who posted Bible verses around her high school in response to gay pride flags received a notice of an in-school suspension (ISS) Friday.

In a video her mom posted on Facebook, Gabby Helsinger says that when she arrived at school last Thursday she saw pride flags and posters in the hallways. She felt that she should write down scripture verses to post on lockers and the walls.

They didn’t last long.

She did it again. This time, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez falsely accused an evangelical Christian leader of inciting genocide.

AOC tweeted out a video of Jerry Falwell Jr. allegedly encouraging conservatives to murder Muslims in cold blood. “This was just this weekend at CPAC, the conference attended by the President,” she wrote. And she’s been retweeted 15,000 times.

There’s just one thing wrong with her description: Everything.
