Stream Splashes: February 10-16 in Review

Every week, The Stream rounds up some highlights from the recent news. We call these our “splashes”: everything from insightful commentary on the week’s big events to small inspiring stories you may have missed.

 

“Caleb, do you know I love you more than anything else in the world?”

I looked at my little son as I zipped his jacket for preschool this morning. His blue eyes met mine. “Mmm hmm.” Then very quietly, almost a whisper, he asked, “More than Daddy loves me?” I dared not say yes. Daddy was standing right there, after all. “I don’t know.” I smiled at him. “I’m not in Daddy’s heart.”

As much as I love Caleb, it’s an imperfect and very human love. But I can’t help but think about my Father’s love for me. It’s a different kind of love. His love is perfect. Infinite. Unconditional. As much as I love, the contrast between His love and my love is striking.

New York’s draconian changes to its abortion laws have taken effect. And one of the first effects? Shielding a man from being prosecuted for killing his unborn child.

Anthony Hobson, 48, allegedly stabbed his 14-weeks-pregnant girlfriend to death on February 3. He was charged with murdering his girlfriend, of course. But because she was carrying a child — his child — the prosecutor charged charged him with second-degree abortion.

The Queens District Attorney’s office dropped the charge, citing New York’s new Reproductive Health Act. Good one, New York.

So, Governor Andrew Cuomo, you “do not believe that religious values should drive political positions.” Explaining your ardent support for abortion throughout pregnancy, you tell The New York Times that “My Roman Catholic values are my personal values.” You invoke the separation of church and state to explain what you do.

You don’t believe that.

As you might already know, Rep. Cortez now pretends that the FAQ she proudly posted on her website and sent to National Public Radio was only a botched early draft. That’s why she took it down. So she won’t take responsibility for all the beans that it spilled. Would we buy that from a white male Republican congressman whose office posted a document calling for sterilizing members of some ethnic group? No, of course not. Isn’t it condescending and even … racist to hold Latina congresswomen to lower standards?
