Soldier Sees Mother for First Time Since ISIS Take Over Two Years Ago
An Iraqi soldier had a chance reunion with his family from Mosul after the city was recently liberated from the Islamic State, according to a Monday BBC News video.
The soldier, Saad, is reportedly from Mosul and has been fighting in the Iraqi ranks since the rise of the terrorist group in his hometown two years ago. Saad’s mother is seen telling him “Don’t cry my son, my darling,” and “We’re so happy, we’re all around you.”
Saad’s family is among the 45,000 lucky civilians to escape Mosul, among the nearly 1.5 million civilians originally trapped by ISIS inside the city.
ISIS is heavily using human shields to stop the Iraqi Security Forces from further advancing in the city.
“If there were no civilians, we’d just burn it all,” an Iraqi counter-terrorism commander told The Washington Post. He said the terrorist group floods the streets with civilians when his forces enter, stopping the deployment of heavy munitions. “I couldn’t bomb with artillery or tanks, or heavy weapons. I said, ‘We can’t do anything,” he lamented.
