Small Town Protests After Mayor Forced To Remove Christian Flag

A Mississippi town protested after an atheist group forced the mayor to remove a Christian flag.

Over a hundred people gathered at Veterans Memorial Park to hold Christian flags Saturday, reports WREG.

“There just comes a point in time when you’ve got to be politically incorrect and take a stand,” Kevin Nelms, an organizer, told WREG.

The rally comes after atheist organization Freedom from Religion Foundation threatened Rienzi Mayor Walter Williams with a lawsuit if he did not remove the Christian flag.

Williams said it was a hard to decision to remove the flag. “I never dreamed that something like this would have happened in a town this small, but it happened,” Williams said. “We’re gonna fly that flag again and I’m hoping it’s not going to be long.”

Nelms vowed that the town would continue fighting against the threats made by the foundation.

“We’re not gonna let other people, or a foundation, or anybody else up in Wisconsin tell us that we can’t fly our flag. You’re gonna take one down, we’re gonna put a hundred back up,” he said.

Supporters put a Christian flag back on the flagpole during the rally. “As a proud American, but number one as a proud Christian, I came today to stand up for the Lord and stand up for our freedom,” Susan Woodruff said.

The town hired an attorney and a meeting has been set to figure out the next steps, according to Williams.
