As Science Has Advanced, So Has the Pro-Life Movement
To be Pro-Life is Pro-Science
It’s been over four decades since Roe v. Wade was decided, and science and technology have advanced a lot since then.
But pro-choice advocates still use the same old arguments to justify abortion. It’s just a “clump of cells,” or a “blob of tissue,” they say. It’s nothing more than a “product of conception,” they try to tell us.
Are they anti-science? Because science now tells us something completely different.
The Science is Undeniable
So, when does human life begin? If we’re talking about ending a human life, or a potential one, this question is significant.
Despite what abortion advocates tell you, actual biologists and embryologists have known for decades now, exactly when life begins.
It’s ironic how pro-choice democrats claim they are the “party of science” and then conveniently ignore these basic facts about human embryology.
According to the Carnegie Stages of human development, which is universally accepted in standard embryology textbooks, life begins at the moment of conception. That is, when the man’s sperm enters the woman’s egg. Not a few days later at implantation, not at viability, or at birth.
At this point, this new human being has her own unique genetic code that is completely separate from her mother and father. Her DNA will determine her sex, eye color, hair color, potential height, and has all the information she needs to grow into an adult.
It’s ironic how pro-choice democrats claim they are the “party of science” and then conveniently ignore these basic facts about human embryology.
Life Continues to Develop in the Womb
But even if the question of when life begins is irrelevant to you, let’s consider how this life develops.
Just twenty-one days after conception, this “clump of cells” has a beating heart with her own blood type, often different from her mother.
Twenty-eight days after conception, this “clump of cells” has eyes, ears and even a tongue.
By the sixth week, the skeleton is formed and brain waves can be detected. The jaws, teeth, and taste buds form. This little person begins to swallow amniotic fluid.
At week seven, the eyelids, toes, and nose form. The baby is kicking and swimming.
At week eight, every organ is present. Fingerprints begin to form and the baby begins to hear. The stomach produces digestive juices, the liver makes blood cells and kidneys begin working.
At week nine, she squints, swallows, moves her tongue, sucks her thumb, and makes a fist.
Eleven weeks after conception, the child practices breathing, urinates, and even smiles!
All this development happens in the first trimester, before the mother can even feel her baby’s movements.
Do We Have an Excuse?
According to scientific research, babies in the womb can feel pain at twenty weeks gestation or earlier. Imagine being safe and secure in your mother’s womb and suddenly being torn apart, limb by limb with a powerful suction device… and being able to feel every bit of the pain.
Today, a baby can survive outside the womb if born as early as 22 weeks gestation — when abortions are legal in many, many states. And as medical technology advances, the age of viability gets younger and younger.
Sure, a few decades ago, we may have gotten away with claiming to not know what was inside a woman’s body. But in the 21st century, do we really have an excuse? We have 2D, 3D, and even 4D ultrasounds that give us a window into the womb.
Every human life begins at conception and continues to develop as a human being, in and out of the womb. And that’s according to science.
We read in the news about surgeons doing life-saving heart surgery on tiny babies in-utero. Others are operating on babies’ spines to prevent spina bifida before birth. These stories remind us of the indisputable human life growing inside a mother’s womb.
When asked, pro-abortion advocates refuse to even answer the basic question, “What is being aborted? Is it a life?” Of course we know why don’t answer — there are huge implications when it comes to abortion.
Instead, they claim it’s a personal matter that each individual gets to decide. No, actually, reality exists outside of our feelings. Every human life begins at conception and continues to develop as a human being, in and out of the womb. And that’s according to science.
Can Pro-Abortion Advocates be Honest About Abortion?
And yet the “party of science” still claims it’s just a “blob of tissue,” or worse, a “parasite.” Sorry, they’re a few decades behind the actual science.
So, can abortion advocates have an honest discussion about abortion in light of what real science now tells us?
In the words of abolitionist William Wilberforce, “You may choose to look the other way but you can never say again that you did not know.”
On Jan. 18, 2019, pro-life Americans will gather in Washington, D.C. for the annual March for Life, the largest pro-life event in the world. This year, its theme is Unique from Day One: Pro-life is pro-science.
