House Majority Whip Steve Scalise said he “felt a sense of calmness” and prayed after being shot in the hip in June at the GOP’s congressional baseball practice, during an appearance on 60 Minutes Sunday.

The Louisiana Republican — who returned to work in Washington, D.C., Thursday — sustained a nearly fatal injury after being shot in the hip. Scalise said his first instinct was to attempt to crawl out of his arms way before his arms gave out.

“At that point, I just went into prayer. And it gave me a calmness. It was a weird calmness while I’m hearing the gunfire,” he told CBS’ Norah O’Donnell.  “You know the first thing that came to mind. I prayed, ‘God, please don’t let my daughter have to walk up the aisle alone.’ That was the first thing that came to mind.”

Scalise is one of five victims wounded during the attack in which 66-year-old James Hodgkinson took aim at roughly two dozen GOP lawmakers on June 14. The congressman said he believes Hodgkinson targeted the lawmakers because of their political leanings.

“I think it was clear he had a political agenda if you want to even call it that. And it’s a sick twisted agenda,” he said. “I don’t think he could have been in the right frame of mind. But it was clear what his intentions were.”
