Robert Morris on the Election and COVID Turmoil: ‘Hold On to Hope and Pray’

By Robert Morris Published on November 18, 2020

A Note from James Robison: Robert Morris, our pastor of Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, wrote a wonderful letter to our local church family that should be read by all members of Christ’s body — the Church. Pray and pass it on.

Dear Gateway Family,

You are on my heart during this tumultuous time. We have faced unique challenges this year — from the pandemic to a closely contested presidential election to a season of civil unrest and racial tension. Many people are anxious and worried about what the future holds. As your pastor, I am writing to encourage you to do two things: hold on to hope and pray.

First, hold on to hope because God is on the throne, and our hope has always been anchored in Christ alone. In the midst of uncertainty, we can have confidence because we know God is faithful. He is working all things together for our good.

Second, pray. Many of you are asking questions about the status of the presidential election. There are many rumors, stories, and narratives circulating. For example, the press has supposedly “called the election,” even though the press does not determine the results of the election. The United States has a process to elect the president that culminates in the Electoral College casting their votes on December 14 and is certified by Congress on January 6.

I want to encourage you not to get caught up in every breaking news story, social media opinion, or internet post but instead wait patiently and walk in peace. God gave our founders wisdom to build checks and balances into our government to see the nation through difficult times and times of transition. I believe we should wait patiently as the process the founders established works its way out to the end.

Five Specific Ways to Pray

As the Church, our primary job right now is to pray. Here are five specific ways to pray:

  1. Pray for our leaders, elected officials, and judges to walk in integrity and do what is right.
  2. Pray for the truth to be revealed and for righteousness to be exalted in our nation.
  3. Pray for vaccines and treatments for COVID-19 and health and provision for all those affected by the coronavirus.
  4. Pray for our communities and for wisdom regarding social injustice, including wisdom for our law enforcement officials.
  5. Pray for God to bless our Gateway Church members and every believer and citizen in America, and pray that peace will prevail.

Above all, pray that everyone will walk in love, patience, and grace, and that our nation will unite around the truth and the principles that have made the United States the greatest nation in the world. In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty that surrounds us, let’s keep our eyes upon Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2)!

Debbie and I are praying for you, and our nation, every day. Please let me know how we can serve you.

And remember, if you would like someone to pray with you, simply text PRAYER to 71010, and someone will follow up to pray with you.

God bless,

Pastor Robert
