Goldsberry: 'I can testify in front of all of you that the Lord gave me Benjamin and Brielle and then He still gave me this.'

Renée Elise Goldsberry won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical Sunday night for her role as Angelica Schulyer in the musical Hamilton. Goldsberry’s acceptance speech for her first Tony win ever was a touching tribute to God and motherhood.

“I’ve spent the last 10 years of my life, what some would consider the life blood of a woman’s career, just trying to have children,” Goldsberry said after winning the award at the 70th Annual Tony Awards. “And I can testify in front of all of you that the Lord gave me Benjamin and Brielle and then he still gave me this.”

The 45-year-old actress has two children, ages 7 and 3, according to People. Benjamin is her biological son and Brielle was adopted by Goldsberry and her husband, Alexis Johnson, in 2014.

Goldsberry also acknowledged her husband, saying, “Hamilton has been one once in a lifetime moment after another and still the best moment every day is going home at night to my husband Alexis.”

Although she has struggled with infertility, Goldsberry pursued her dream of becoming a mother. Her passion for her children and thankfulness to God were inspiring. She is a role model of a strong woman who has had a successful career doing what she loves. But she is also a model because she has had this career while valuing her family and finding joy in being a mother.

Instead of sending the message that women must choose between their job and having children, Goldsberry has balanced her roles as a mother and as Angelica Schulyer with grace. She doesn’t view her children as an obstacle, standing in the way of her “real work,” but she also has found worth and great success in her job. That’s what feminism looks like to me.

Even more importantly: Goldsberry acknowledged God as the one who has given her these gifts. Even as she held up her first Tony award, the actress praised God for her children and for her talent.
