I don’t want to ruin your weekend by burying you with a dump truck full of more “IMPEACHMENT!” developments, but we have to keep them flowing to avoid a sewer blockage. So I’ll just dispense with some of them quickly and we’ll see if they manage to survive until Monday before going into any further detail. 

The major story is how President Trump is forcing Nancy Pelosi to stop pussyfooting around with her vague “impeachment inquiry” gibberish and put up or shut up: Either call for a full House vote to launch impeachment hearings or back off the witch hunt and get to work on the nation’s business. 

It was reported that several notoriously anti-Trump committee heads had already subpoenaed the White House for documents and testimony. Former US Attorney Andrew McCarthy pointed out that this was wrong, those were not subpoenas. What the committee members sent were letters requesting documents and voluntary testimony and threatening obstruction charges if the White House didn’t comply. But they can’t charge anyone with obstruction for refusing to comply with a voluntary request. McCarthy said it’s all just “political theatrics.”

(FYI: There’s some dispute over whether the House has to hold a full vote to launch a formal impeachment investigation. That’s the precedent, but Democrats have an unprecedented level of TDS, so they might do anything.  The Constitution is vague, saying only that the House has impeachment power … but it does not say “the House Speaker,” which implies a majority vote is required, not just the say-so of one official. I’ll let the lawyers fight this one out.)

The standing committees do have subpoena power, but if they make this all legally official, then the White House would have the right to assert executive privilege and contest them. The subpoena compliance issue would then have to be settled by the courts. That would probably take almost until Election Day, insuring the Democrats would have zero accomplishments to run on, having squandered 100% of their two years in the majority on trying to “get” Trump.

The Democrats just want a “bash Trump” show on TV, they don’t want to have to go to court and justify this nonsense on the “strength” of their “evidence.”

But as Friday drew to a close, Trump declared that his Administration would refuse to comply with any subpoenas until she held a full house vote and made her impeachment crusade official, which would force all members to go on record and give Republicans the power to cross-examine Democrat witnesses and call their own (all things Pelosi doesn’t want.)

Three Democratic committee chairs reportedly bit on Trump’s bait (they never imagine there might be a hook in it) and sent subpoenas.  But that’s enough for now.  Let’s wait until Monday and find out if they really are subpoenas before commenting at length. (The media have been wrong about this subject once this week already.)

The Good News

In the meantime, since it’s Saturday, here’s some good news: the new federal jobs numbers show that in September, the US economy added 136,000 jobs and the unemployment rate dropped to 3.5%, the lowest in 50 years.

Oh, won’t someone save us from this hellish torture of living under President Trump?!!
