New protections for health care workers who morally object to certain procedures are on the way, Politico reported Tuesday. The Trump administration could announce the protections this week.

The protections would allow health care workers to abstain on moral grounds from certain procedures. For instance, doctors and nurses who oppose abortion would not be forced to participate in one. Neither would health care providers be forced to help someone “transition” to the opposite sex.

Organizations that do not respect such moral objections could be punished, Politico reported.

Politico notes that such protections existed under President George W. Bush. They were revoked President Barack Obama. The new protections will come through Health and Human Services (HHS). Politico reported they are currently under White House review at the Office of Management and Budget.

Politico quotes Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.). “To be forced under pain of losing one’s job is just outrageous,” he said recently. And President Donald Trump is “now looking to remedy that through the HHS mechanism.”
