President Trump’s Jerusalem Announcement Lights Up Twitter
President Trump’s announcement that the United States will recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital lit up Twitter.
Although reaction around the world was mixed to say the least, the move was generally applauded in Washington.
The State Department was naturally on board. It tweeted, โ.@POTUS‘ decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israelโs capital aligns U.S. presence with the reality that Jerusalem is home to Israelโs legislature, Supreme Court, Presidentโs office, and Prime Ministerโs office. https://go.usa.gov/xn5U6.โ

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson added that “We have consulted with many friends, partners & allies in advance of the President making his decision. We firmly believe there is an opportunity for a lasting peace. As the President said today, โPeace is never beyond the grasp of those willing to reach it.โ

Three of President Trump’s primary challengers are among those offering support. Senator Ted Cruz tweeted that the announcement sends “a message that rejects all who seek to delegitimize Israel through falsifying and erasing the profound ties that exist between the Jewish people and Jerusalem.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham tweeted that he fully supports “the Trump Administration’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel because this statement reflects the reality on the ground for the last 3,000 years.”

Even Jeb Bush gave President Trump a thumb’s up. He tweeted, “Jerusalem is the capital of Israel and I applaud @POTUS for seeing through Americaโs promise to relocate its embassy there. This is an important show of solidarity with Israel, one of our nationโs greatest allies.”

(Although he hasn’t tweeted about it, Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told the Weekly Standard he had advised President Trump to declare Jerusalem Israel’s capital.)
Columnist Rich Lowry said that the fact “Jerusalem is the capital of Israel is 1) a factual statement; 2) has long been an American consensus.” He added that Trump “is simply saying the obvious.”

Gov. Mike Huckabee said he was “Proud of @realDonaldTrump for embassy move to Jerusalem Capitol (sic) of Jewish people since time of King David and never Capitol (sic) for any other nation. EVER. @POTUS shows courage and clarity.”

From the entertainment world, TV’s Chelsea Handler accused Trump of “setting the world on fire,” (seeming to blame him for the L.A. wildfires in the process as well.) Roseanne Barr had a different take. Barr, who is Jewish, tweeted “Jews owe a debt of gratitude to American Evangelicals for recognizing #jerusalem as Israel’s eternal capital. #ThankUFriends.”

Pastor John Hagee, founder of Christians United With Israel, called the move “courageous” in a video statement.

The last word goes to Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “This is a historic day. Jerusalem has been the capital of Israel for nearly 70 years. Jerusalem has been the focus of our hopes, our dreams, our prayers for three millennia. Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish people for 3,000 years. Thank you, @realDonaldTrump!”
