Pennsylvania Dog Saves Owner From Fire

A Pennsylvania pet is credited with saving his owner during a house fire Sunday morning. It’s normal for the protective 10-year-old dog, Che, to bark when you pass Andrea Bulat’s house, neighbor Anthony Daly of Philadelphia’s Port Richmond section told WPVI. But when neighbors awoke to the Chow and Golden Retriever mix barking at around 4:30 a.m. Sunday, they were surprised.

They looked out the window to see Bulat’s home “engulfed” in flames.

Bulat was rescued from her burning house by firefighters, who found Che laying on top of his owner amid the fire. Bulat was unconscious, and Che needed resuscitation.

“The dog stayed on her chest the whole time, which prevented her from being burned totally,” neighbor Adele Butler told WPVI.

Bulat is reportedly in critical condition — over 50 percent of her body sustained burns.

Che is recovering from smoke inhalation at an animal hospital. WPVI initially reported that his survival was uncertain due to his advanced age, but a Facebook post from Red Paw Emergency Relief Team on Monday said that he “is over the hump” and will be released soon.

“If the dog wasn’t there, she probably would be dead,” Butler said in a video. Watch the video from WPVI here.
