Pence: Ryan, Trump Have ‘Identical’ Goals

By Published on September 13, 2016

GOP vice presidential nominee Indiana Gov. Mike Pence assured voters Tuesday that past tensions between House Speaker Paul Ryan and Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump will not affect their ability to work together in accomplishing the party’s common goals.

Following a meeting with the Republican Conference Tuesday, Pence said the amount of respect he and Trump have for the speaker is “boundless,” noting  that leaders, even within the same party, at times don’t agree on everything.

“In a majority party you are on occasion going to have differences of opinion, but our goals are identical,” he told reporters Tuesday. “I think what was so inspiring to me, to be at the House Republican conference today and in the meeting that I had with the speaker, is how much consistency there is between Donald Trump’s vision to rebuild our military, revive the American economy, uphold the rule of law and the agenda House Republicans put forward in their agenda, A Better Way.”

Ryan, the 2012 vice presidential nominee, denounced several of the billionaire’s more controversial comments and policy proposals throughout the 2016 election. The Wisconsin Republican was initially hesitant to throw his support behind the candidate, waiting until June to endorse.

Trump returned the favor, mirroring Ryan’s language, saying he “wasn’t quite ready” to endorse the speaker until just before the August primary.

Despite past issues, Pence built bridges, talking about how Trump’s policies reflect similar goals to those which the House Republicans laid out in the conservative blueprint, “A Better Way.”

“I really do believe we have a historic opportunity before us today — with the enormous talent we have here in the House of Representatives led by Speaker Paul Ryan, with the energy and vision of a president Donald Trump and a re-elected Republican Senate — to turn this country around and to turn it around very quickly,” he said.

“We feel the wind at our backs and we’re excited about getting this agenda and moving it into law,” Ryan said, agreeing with Pence’s statement.
