Is Obama About to Fire Comey Over Clinton Flap?
President Barack Obama has been convinced to fire FBI Director James Comey, journalist and frequent Clinton critic Ed Klein reported Monday, citing a White House source.
“After persistent prodding by senior adviser Valerie Jarrett to remove James Comey from his job as director of the FBI, President Obama has agreed the time has come to fire America’s top cop,” Klein wrote. The decision was made, says Klein, after Comey reopened the FBI’s investigation into Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s email practices as Secretary of State just 11 days before Election Day.
Comey was hammered by Democratic politicians and pundits for the decision, until he announced Sunday the investigation was again closed.
Klein’s claim is starkly different than the public image given by both Obama and White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest. Obama’s most significant criticism of Comey came during an interview last week in support of Clinton where he implied that the FBI Director was operating “on innuendo” and “incomplete information” in the then-reopened investigation.
Earnest, meanwhile, praised Comey:
Director Comey is a man of integrity and principle and well regarded by officials in both parties and served as a senior position in the Bush administration and got bipartisan support when his nomination to be director of the FBI was considered by the United States Senate … they speak to his good character and the president’s assessment of his integrity and his character has not changed. For example, the president doesn’t believe that Director Comey is trying to influence the outcome of the election. And the president doesn’t believe he’s secretly supporting a candidate or political party. He’s in a tough spot.
Comey Angers Both Republicans and Democrats
Comey was criticized by Republicans for not filing charges against Clinton in July when he concluded that she had unintentionally violated federal law. That decision was revisited in late October when the FBI found 650,000 potentially related emails in the computer of Clinton aide Huma Abedin. Abedin’s computer was used as part of an investigation into her husband Anthony Weiner’s possible sexual involvement with a minor.
Democrats immediately leveled charges that Comey, a registered Republican, was attempting to swing the election for GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump. Comey, for his part, said the unusual congressional notification of the renewed investigation was done because he had previously testified to Congress that Clinton was legally in the clear. On Sunday, Comey contacted Congress again, stating that the emails were either unrelated to Clinton’s email practices or had already been examined by the FBI.
FBI Agents Also Not Happy With Comey
Klein also said that FBI agents are displeased with Comey’s leadership, which could lead to a resignation before any possible firing.
‘I met with friends from the FBI and Justice,’ said a retired Justice Department official, ‘and they were all in agreement that Comey’s jerky decisions—opening the case against Hillary without definite cause, then closing it without consulting with his top deputies—was flabbergasting and deeply disturbing for career law enforcement and prosecutors.
‘Whatever support and goodwill Jim had until recently has been destroyed,’ this source continued. ‘He has injured the bureau and it will take a miracle for him to survive this.’
The FBI is also investigating Clinton’s charitable foundation, which she heads with her husband and daughter. That investigation is unrelated to the email investigation.
