NYC Firefighters Forced to Take Transgender Sensitivity Training

By Published on June 27, 2016

New York City firefighters must take a “Trans 101” course aimed at teaching employees the best ways to treat employees and coworkers who declare themselves transgender.

A city official said the Tuesday course teaches city employees how to be courteous to their transgender coworkers and explains what LGBTQI stands for, according to the New York Post. The city Commission for Human Rights started the two-hour course back in March.

In the course, firefighters learn about using correct pronouns when addressing a transgender and what words are not acceptable to use. The course also teaches what “gender identity” and “gender expression” are and how to tell the difference between the two. “Trans 101” encourages attendees to ask transgenders what pronoun they want to be addressed with.

“People need to learn to not be afraid to ask someone who is transitioning genders what their pronoun is,” a Commission for Human Rights spokesman told the New York Post.

Many firefighters didn’t even know about the course.

“It’s never been an issue, but people have made it an issue. This is one of those trainings where they’re just preparing for a potential problem,” a fireman said.

Jersey City police received their own sensitivity training two weeks ago. At the training seminar, police officer shared “coming out” stories, and emphasized how cops must use correct pronouns with transgenders.

New York City pool employees are expected to take the course as well, since they will be dealing with bathrooms and locker rooms. Sixty-five pool employees have already taken it and approximately 200 need to take it.

“It’s especially important for Parks employees [to take the training] because they work in a place that involves changing clothes,” said a commission spokesman.
