Number of Potential Terrorists in Germany Continues to Grow

By Published on July 21, 2017

Almost 700 Islamists in Germany pose an immediate terror threat, according to figures released the federal police (BKA) Friday.

BKA estimates 690 Islamist extremists are willing to carry out terror attacks, up from 600 at the last estimate in February. Germany’s domestic intelligence agency (BfV) recently said around 24,400 Islamists are active in the country but most of them don’t pose an immediate terror threat.

The extremist left-wing scene has been a hot topic since the violent riots at the G20 summit in Hamburg earlier this month. BKA chief Holger Münch told daily newspaper Frankfurter Rundschau Friday that the danger from the far-right and far-left is minor compared to threats posed by jihadis.

“In the left-wing scene, the [German] states have currently estimated a number that can be counted on the fingers of one hand,” Münch said. “In the right-wing scene, the number is in the low double digits.”

Berlin’s interior ministry warned Tuesday that the left-wing scene could turn to assassinations of political opponents in the future if the current trend isn’t reversed.

“2016 was marked out by a spiral in left-wing violence that not only led to a multitude of serious crimes, but also in part to a radicalized tone — which has seen calls for the murder of police officers and politicians,” the interior ministry warned in a security report released Tuesday.
