Nearly 1 in 3 Abortions Happen at Planned Parenthood ‘Health’ Centers

More than half a billion taxpayer dollars now make up more than 40 percent of Planned Parenthood’s revenue.

Planned Parenthood is performing more abortions — now about one in three in the U.S. — and is providing less non-abortion services in its “health centers,” even as demand for abortions and its overall client base are declining.

The share of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood jumped from about 20 percent of all U.S. abortions in 2004 (255,015) to a record high of about 32 percent in 2011 (333,964), an analysis of Planned Parenthood and federal data published Wednesday by Americans United for Life (AUL) shows.

Relevant federal data ends in 2011, but Planned Parenthood has continued to report high numbers of abortions since then, performing 327,653 abortions in 2013. And the percentage of its patients who have abortions increased from about 9 percent in 2004 to about 12 percent in 2013.

AUL attributes the increase to the growth of new Planned Parenthood “mega-centers,” all of which provide abortions, and which and have opened in at least 14 states, often pushing smaller clinics out of the market.

Planned Parenthood “has gobbled up the abortion market, aggressively displacing unaffiliated abortion clinics in favor of its large facilities in urban centers, so that it can increase the number of abortions performed,” AUL said statement announcing the report.

At the same time, national demand for abortion is decreasing, Planned Parenthood’s overall client base declined by about 10 percent, and the share of non-abortion services it provides, such as cancer screening, has dropped by more than 50 percent since 2004.

Demand for abortions has dropped in nearly every state since 2010, and declined by about 12 percent nationwide, the Associated Press recently reported.

“Over the last 45 years, Planned Parenthood has become the expert in making money from ending lives,” AUL President and CEO Charmaine Yoest said in a statement, attributing the increase in abortions to a strategy to “mass-produce abortions at an even deadlier rate.”

More than half a billion taxpayer dollars now make up more than 40 percent of Planned Parenthood’s revenue, the report adds.

Planned Parenthood did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
