Military Photo of the Day: VE Day 70th Anniversary

By Tom Sileo Published on May 8, 2015

On May 8, 1945, the free world took to the streets to celebrate the end of World War II in Europe. This photograph, taken 70 years ago tonight in Times Square, captures the jubilation felt by millions of Americans, even as the nation agonized over the continued fighting in the Pacific. World War II would officially end on Sept. 2, 1945, when Japan formally surrendered to Allied Forces on the USS Missouri.

The debt we owe to America’s World War II veterans, fallen heroes and family members can never be repaid. Seventy years after this historic moment, we say thank you, while also pledging that every future generation will be told of your courage.
