Kids First, Parents Second: How Love Is Supposed to Work

The role of adults is to protect children, not to “follow their bliss” and assume that the kids will prove “resilient,” says children’s rights activist Katy Faust, author of Them Before Us. On the Dr. J Show, she said she tries to “show the real faces of the kids who are victimized when we get marriage and family wrong, when we believe the lies that biology doesn’t matter, love makes a family, or moms and dads are optional.”

Her book shares 120 stories of children who came from a wide range of family forms. Her conclusion: β€œWe have victimized an entire generation of kids.”

β€œWe need to elevate the rights of children above desires of adults,” said Faust. She advocates this with lawmakers in the U.S., abroad, and at the United Nations. β€œWhat brings children pain is losing their mother or father, especially when an adult’s selfishness led to that loss.”
