Joy Break: ‘I Just Figured I’d Do What I Can Do’
Man grills food for residents in Mayfield, Kentucky, after a tornado devastated the town.
Jim Finch drove to Mayfield, Kentucky, following the devastating tornado Friday. He began grilling food and handing out water.
When we turn on our televisions or smart phones we are bombarded with news that brings us down. Where are all the good stories? They’re still there. Here’s one that we hope will bless you.
A tornado devastated Mayfield, Kentucky, last Friday. Residents said the tornado “cut through the heart of Mayfield,” a small city that was once picturesque. “Every historical building we have is on the ground, churches that have been around for hundreds of years hundreds of years,” Steven Elder, a banker in the city, said. “It’s like a war zone or just something out of the movies.” The town of 10,000 people has lost power.
One man decided to do something. “I know they don’t have no electricity,” said Jim Finch, “So that means they don’t have no restaurants, no running water. I just figured I’d do what I can do, show up with some food and some water.” Finch drove to Mayfield with a grill and began grilling burgers, chicken, sausage, eggs,” he explained. “You know, grab and go type of food.” When asked if he had a restaurant, he laughed and said no. “Just needed to be done.”
