Stream Splashes: January 20-26 in Review
Every week, The Stream rounds up some highlights from the recent news. We call these our “splashes”: everything from insightful commentary on the week’s big events to small inspiring stories you may have missed.
One of the most articulate young conservative speakers, Ben Shapiro, addressed the March for Life last Friday. In the course of his remarks, he sparked some controversy that even led to some advertisers cancelling their sponsorship of his television show.
What did Shapiro, a religious orthodox Jew, say that was so provocative? He asked: “Let’s say you had a time machine. And you could go back and kill baby Hitler to prevent World War II and the Holocaust. Would you do it?”
Several Catholic teens from Kentucky are facing death threats and may well have had their lives ruined this weekend because of yet another example of Snake News. You know them by the viral hashtag #CovingtonBoys.
Their time in the Nation’s Capital started with a glorious March for Life and ended with them being dragged through the mud by the media and commentators of all stripes. Now they’re not just facing a long ride home. They face expulsion and threats of death.
Why? Because of a selective video clip that was designed to injure.
“Jesus never mentioned homosexuality!” That often-heard statement is one of the quickest and most common excuses people give for approving homosexual practice.
Does it hold any weight biblically, though? And if it is true that Jesus never mentioned it, does that really justify such behavior?
The answer is “no” to both questions. Here’s why.
Growing up, my grandpa was my hero. He was a professional baseball player in the 1920s. An engaging storyteller, he used to recount to his grandkids how he played with Ty Cobb and other stars of the era.
He would also tell jokes, usually at the expense of people of another race. As a child, I thought he was funny. I had no early conviction or recognition of racism. We just thought, It’s Grandpa and it’s okay. Only decades later would our family recognize the diminishment of people, usually African Americans, in those jokes and attitudes.
