Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton sparred over ideal nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court at Sunday night’s second presidential debate.

Clinton promised to remake the ideological composition of the Court, while Trump accused her of hostility to the Second Amendment.

“I want to appoint Supreme Court justices who understand the way the world really works, who have real-life experience, who would not — have not just been in a big law firm and maybe clerked for a judge and then gotten on the bench but maybe they tried more cases, they actually understand what people are up against because I think the current court has gone in the wrong direction,” Clinton said.

The answer, which tracks others she has given on the topic, signals she will not renominate Judge Merrick Garland to succeed the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

“Justice Scalia, great judge, died recently, and we have a vacancy,” Trump said. “I am looking to appoint judges very much in the mold of Justice Scalia. I’m looking for judges and I have actually picked 20 of them so that people would see.” He went on to accuse Clinton of laying siege to the Second Amendment, and promised to nominate judges who would uphold the right to bear arms.

The attack stems from comments Clinton made at a closed-door fundraiser in New York in late 2015. “We’ve got to go after this,” Clinton said on audio obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. “And here again, the Supreme Court is wrong on the Second Amendment. And I am going to make that case every chance I get.”

Clinton responded that she supported a universal background check, a variant of which Trump has endorsed.
