God of Heaven and Earth Film Explores Astronomy and Geology to Support Jesus’ Birth and Death

What was the Star of Bethlehem? What happened to the geologic record when Jesus was crucified? This film explains what happened.

Coming November 5 and 6, a new documentary called God of Heaven and Earth . The film focuses on the birth and the death of Jesus and what happened at those times in the sky and on the ground. The feature-length documentary is the first installment in Thinking Man Film’s Bible Cinema Roadshow, a year-long film series that will bring films to theaters across the nation. Writer-Producer Elliott Wallach (When Calls the Heart) and Bible Cinema Roadshow creator Timothy Mahoney (Patterns of Evidence) recently spoke with The Stream’s Nancy Flory about the project.

“We’re using astronomy to show the star of Bethlehem, and it’s [also] about the death of Christ, using geology to show … what happened and the evidences of an earthquake,” Mahoney told The Stream.

“And all of a sudden you see this evidence of, you know, what this is, what was happening in this period of time in the sky,” Wallach said. Wallach also wanted to see if Matthew 27 was correct when it said there was an earthquake at Jesus’ crucifixion. “Then to find out an earthquake happened in 33 A.D., that very year, right out of Matthew 27. … You cannot deny that an earthquake happened in 33 A.D. [in the area where Jesus was crucified].” Wallach added,

The one place where you can actually, specifically prove that an earthquake happened [in] a specific year happens to be the one place where the most important monumental, significant earthquake in history, in all of time. And it happened right there in Jerusalem.

Mahoney wants to strengthen the faith of viewers, especially those who have been told there isn’t any evidence of Jesus or other biblical stories. “When I went to Egypt, I was told that there wasn’t any real evidence for the Exodus, and that caused a crisis of faith in my life. And Nancy, there are a lot of people that have been told something, and it creates a seed of doubt or seed of ‘maybe this isn’t really real.’ And I have met many, many people who have walked away from belief in the Bible, and then ultimately belief in God, because they were told something. And so I had to make a decision. … [W]as I going to accept that? And you and I wouldn’t be talking right now if I had just said, ‘Okay, I guess it didn’t really happen.’ Because if it didn’t happen, if one thing didn’t happen, then the rest of it is questionable.

Wallach wants to keep faith-based films in the marketplace. “Movies are too powerful not to be used to improve the human condition,” he explained. “And so, to abandon the art form to others that are literally polluting and corrupting the very souls of our children, that cannot stand. That will not stand. I will do everything I can to … make sure that we can bring more content … and in some way, put a dent in all of the darkness and somehow try to bring in some light that everybody can enjoy.”

Christian moviegoers will be strengthened and inspired when they see the film. “I believe they’re going to be very encouraged with what they see and how their faith is supported by science,” said Mahoney. The message of the film is that God is revealing Himself through two sciences. “I would urge people to really pray about who they should invite. They should buy tickets, and they should invite them because this might be the only message that their friends or family will hear about these things. And it’s in an environment that would be inviting, you know, get the popcorn, get the treats or whatever, and sit there. But they’re going to be inspired, and I believe the Holy Spirit will speak to them.”
