Gary Johnson Glad ‘No One Was Hurt’ in Attacks That Injured Dozens

Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson said he’s glad “no one was hurt” in the string of attacks in three states Saturday, although dozens of people were injured.

“Tell me your reaction to these news stories from the past 24 hours, what do you think the government needs to be doing on a day like today?” CNN’s Brian Stelter asked Johnson, referring to explicitly to the New York City bombing, the stabbing at a Minnesota mall and the bombs found near a charity run in New Jersey.

“Well, first of all, just grateful nobody got hurt,” Johnson replied.

Twenty-nine people were injured in the New York City blast Saturday night, which occurred in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. Police found another bomb nearby a few hours later. And three people are still in the hospital after a Somali college student stabbed nine people in a Minnesota mall Saturday night. One of them is in life-threatening condition.

No one, however, was injured at the site of a blast in New Jersey, where one of three pipe bombs inside a trash can detonated on a route where thousands of runners were preparing to run a 5K Marine Corps charity race. Police detonated another bomb found near a train station in Elizabeth New Jersey early Monday morning.

Johnson continued: “Secondly, law enforcement is on the scene, responders are on the scene. If there’s anything I learned having been governor of New Mexico for eight years, it’s that these people really do care. They are really qualified. They really do get to the bottom of this, and by getting to the bottom of this as an elected official — look we’re going to find out who is responsible, whether that’s an individual or a group. And they will be brought to justice, and that is something that all of us demand. All of us.”

Stelter looked puzzled, but did not follow up on Johnson’s comment that no one was hurt.
