Game Changer? Mitt Romney to Make ‘Major Speech’ About Presidential Race Today

Fox News is reporting that Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee who lost to Barack Obama in that year’s general election, will give a ‘major speech’ about the 2016 race tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. ET to the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah. He has not said exactly what he will talk about, but has played up the importance of the event and is expected to lay out the case against GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump.

According to staffers speaking off the record, he will not make an endorsement or announce a presidential run. However, confidential sources within the Romney campaign also told The Stream today they see signs that his announcement tomorrow is not just a run-of-the-mill pronouncement, but an indication that he may enter the race soon if he deems it necessary. Unlikely? Perhaps, but I happened to run into him in the airport in January, introduced myself as a conservative columnist, and asked him if he was going to enter the presidential race. Romney replied, “If the others agree.”

After months of silence following his decision not to enter the race, Romney stepped back into the limelight last week to criticize Trump, leading many to believe that Romney may indeed jump into the race at the last minute if he is perceived to be the only person who can defeat Trump.

Romney said there is a “bombshell” in Trump’s tax returns, and demanded their release. Trump has not released his returns, although both Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio have released portions of theirs. Romney also recently attacked Trump for not clearly disavowing support from white supremacists, tweeting, “A disqualifying & disgusting response by @realDonaldTrump to the KKK. His coddling of repugnant bigotry is not in the character of America.” Trump later disavowed white supremacist David Duke.
