Eric Metaxas Makes a Case for Christian Support of Trump
Christian author Eric Metaxas sat down with The Daily Caller News Foundation at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland and answered the question: Can Christians vote for Trump in good conscience?
“Sometimes you have to hold your nose and vote for the person who is going to do the least damage or who is maybe going to pull you back from the brink,” Metaxas told TheDCNF. “You can even hate trump, but I’m saying you better be sure that you understand what a Hillary Clinton presidency brings.”
Trump has divorced twice, said he doesn’t seek forgiveness from God, and has shown little competency in terms of the Bible when asked questions about the Christian faith.
“Donald Trump is not some great man of virtue, but this much I’ll say for him,” Metaxas told TheDCNF. “I think he loves America and I don’t think he wants to line his own pockets. At this point, that is the kind of virtue that we are talking about.”
“We’re not talking about sexual ethics,” Metaxas continued. “We are not talking about being a narcissist or being humble. We are talking about something very fundamental. When you are in a war mentality, you say ‘who is going to stand up where we need to stand up.’”
In January, Trump called a book of the Bible “Two Corinthians,” even though it is normally called “Second Corinthians.” He has also promoted the Trump name through casinos and extravagant displays of wealth. He’s also been called racist, xenophobic and a bigot by major news outlets for comments he’s made about Mexicans, Muslims and women.
Metaxas dismisses the accusations that Trump is racist. He said Trump calling Mexican immigrants criminals and rapists has been misrepresented and that he wasn’t referring to all Mexicans but was only saying some criminals come across the border.
“If I thought he was an actual racist, I would be the first one screaming about it,” Metaxas said.
He pointed to Supreme Court Justices and immigration as major factors to consider when deciding which candidate to vote for.
“The DNC, the democrats, have been trying hard to make open borders,” Metaxas told TheDCNF. “That means we are demographically never going to be able to elect somebody who is a Constitutionalist again. We are just not going to have the numbers. It is that desperate.”
Metaxas is promoting his new book, If You Can Keep It, where he writes about whether the U.S. can remain a republic. “I would say we are at the very door of becoming America in name only and we haven’t noticed it,” Metaxas said. “I am a man on a mission.”
