The Clintons’ History with the Confederate Flag

In the wake of the racist attack on a black Christian church in Charleston, South Carolina, which claimed the lives of nine of the congregation’s members, many are calling for the removal of the Confederate flag from the state capitol. South Carolina’s Republican governor, Nikki Haley, is putting the pressure on South Carolina’s legislature to change things:

The murderer, now locked up in Charleston, said he hoped his actions would start a race war. We have an opportunity to show that not only was he wrong, but that just the opposite is happening,” Haley said. “My hope is that by removing a symbol that divides us, we can move our state forward in harmony, and we can honor the nine blessed souls who are now in heaven.

After the move, Haley was applauded by Republicans and Democrats alike. Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, tweeted that Republicans were just arriving at the place she lives:

This is interesting, because, as this article from The Federalist notes, Hillary did not publicly protest her husband honoring “the confederate states” while he was the governor of Arkansas, even designating a portion of the state flag to commemorate the confederacy. If she protested the flag, it seems to have been only after there was no longer any political risk to her or her husband.

The mainstream media has been repeatedly asking Republican presidential candidates about this politically dicey issue of pulling down the Confederate flag, but their treatment of Hillary has been very different. Phil Kerpen raised the point in a recent Tweet:

No one seems to have asked the Dixiecrats of the 1980s when they decided the Confederate flag was racist. But it probably wasn’t in 1992:

Why has no one in the mainstream brought this up? Good question. Maybe someone can ask Hillary Clinton at her next town hall meeting.
