Child Critically Wounded in Shooting at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church

A woman dressed in a trench coat, carrying a long gun and dragging along a small child opened fire at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood church in Houston Sunday at the start of a Spanish-language service. The child was critically wounded and a 57-year-old man was injured. The shooter, who police say claimed to have a bomb, was taken down by two off-duty police officers and is dead.

The live broadcast from the church captured the moment shots were fired.

A witness told KTRK, “The whole church started praying and declaring Jesus’ name. I was like, ‘This might be the last time I get to pray, that I get to glorify the name of Jesus, so I’m going to do this.'”

Pastor Osteen told reporters, “There are forces of evil, but the forces that are for us, the forces of God are stronger than that.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a statement, β€œOur hearts are with those impacted by today’s tragic shooting and the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston. Places of worship are sacred.”

The motive for the shooting is unclear as is the child’s relationship to the shooter.

We join the governor, Pastor Osteen in praying for the injured and the Lakewood community.
