Breitbart Reporter Files Criminal Complaint Against Trump Campaign Manager

New video appears to disprove claims of mistaken identity.

Breitbart reporter Michelle Fields has filed a criminal complaint against Donald Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowski for alleged battery.

As The Stream has been reporting, Fields was grabbed and shoved aside while trying to ask Trump a question after his press conference on Tuesday night. The assault left visible bruising. Fields did not see who hurt her, but Washington Post reporter Ben Terris did. He identified the culprit as Lewandowski.

Bruises and witnesses aside, Donald Trump declared Thursday night, “I don’t think it happened,” and suggested reporters “check her out.”

On Friday, video of the incident emerged from several sources. This lead to a stunning series of events involving Fields’ employer, Breitbart.com.

Breitbart, which has been otherwise enthusiastic in its reporting on Trump, first issued a detailed analysis of several clips, attempting to suggest Terris had the wrong guy. Writer Joel Pollack laid out an argument that Terris had likely misidentified Lewandowksi, mistaking him for another “man with short cropped hair and a suit.” Namely, a security official Pollack describes as “slightly taller” than Lewandowski. He’s also stockier with a fuller head of hair.

Lewandowski immediately pounced on the Breitbart defense:

The Trump campaign declared itself “vindicated” and demanded an apology from Terris. But Ben Terris would have none of it, insisting in the Washington Post‘s strong rebuttal, “I saw what I saw.”

During the whole incident, says Terris, he had his “eyes trained on Corey Lewandowski,” because Terris was there to profile the campaign team with a focus on Lewandowski. Terris took strong issue with Pollak’s assertion that mistaken identity is the “likeliest explanation” based in part on Lewandowski’s denials. “Because he denied it?” asked Terris. “This is Breitbart.”

As the day went on, Breitbart backed away from its claim of “mistaken identity,” acknowledging that new video did show Lewandowski reaching for Fields. Watch for yourself:

Still, Breitbart News spokesman Kurt Bardella had enough. He resigned Friday, saying he could no longer give “100 percent” to the people he was representing. “My own personal observation is that there is a cycle of behavior that is escalating and it’s happening exclusively at Donald Trump events,” he said. “It is wrong, disgusting and indicative of an ugliness that is contaminating the public and political discourse in our country.”

A few hours later, that ugliness was broadcast to the world from Chicago.
