There’s a new summer music festival coming in 2015, and it will be held in a part of the country you wouldn’t necessarily expect.

Bon Iver, in their first performance since 2012, will headline the inaugural Eaux Claires Music & Arts Festival, curated by the band’s frontman Justin Vernon and The National’s Aaron Dessner. The latter band will also perform at the 2015 event, alongside eclectic acts like Spoon, Sufjan Stevens, Low, the Tallest Man on Earth, Poliça, Doomtree, Boys Noize and Indigo Girls (performing their fifth LP, Swamp Ophelia). The festival – named after the French spelling of Eau Claire, Wisconsin – will take place at the city’s Foster Farm on July 17th and 18th.

I spent every summer of my childhood in the forests of Wisconsin, and have been fishing and camping in the Eau Claire area many times. While my fond memories of the place do not scream out “great place for a music festival” at me, Bon Iver is a well-respected musical act that grew up in the small Wisconsin town and so the move makes more than a little sense.

Many of the more popular music festivals around the country take place in locales that are far off the beaten path. Coachella, for example, is in the middle of the desert, some 125 miles outside of Los Angeles. Vernon and Dessner — the musicians responsible for the Eau Claire Festival — released the following “trailer” in which they explain some of the thinking behind the highly anticipated event.

The modern youth movement toward simple living, organic eating and community building will no doubt be on full display this summer in Eau Claire, WI.
