Asia Bibi Acquitted, But Persecution of Pakistani Christians Remains

Franklin Graham offers a call to prayer in a case that put a believer on death row for blasphemy and whose acquittal sparked angry protests.

We thank God for the news that Asia Bibi, the 47-year-old Christian woman accused of blasphemy, has been acquitted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Now is the time for an even greater call to prayer.

This is a very dangerous situation — for Asia, her family, and for the judges who acquitted her. Some Islamist groups are protesting furiously —burning tires, blocking the streets, and calling for the judges to be killed.

In 2011 when the provincial governor spoke out defending Asia and questioning the blasphemy laws, he was assassinated by his own bodyguard who was “defending Islam.”

Christians in Pakistan live under threat of danger constantly and suffer persecution that you and I can hardly imagine. Join me in praying for Asia to be able to leave the country safely and that the Supreme Court, who did the right thing, will be protected.

Here is a helpful FAQ on the Asia Bibi case, which left her on death row after a quarrel with neighbors led to a false blasphemy charge. What set off the quarrel? The neighbors refused to drink water she brought them because she was a Christian. Meanwhile, anti-blasphemy protests continue to spread in Pakistan.
