Anti-Trump Illegal Immigrant Activist Charged With Rape of Ex-Girlfriend
An advocate for illegal immigrants known for his activism against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has been charged with raping an ex-girlfriend.
According to Fox13 in Salt Lake City, Utah:
Well-known Hispanic activist Tony Yapias was charged with rape after he allegedly assaulted a woman who ended their four-year relationship a few months ago.
Yapias, 50, known as Adolfo Tony Yapias-Delgado, was formally charged in the 3rd District Monday with rape, a first-degree felony and evidence tampering, a class A misdemeanor.
Yapias is the director of Proyecto Latino de Utah.
The alleged victim appears to be in the U.S. illegally, though news reports have not confirmed this. Yapias claimed innocence in the charges, according to court documents, saying the woman removed her clothes. However, texts between the two that Yapias deleted but were recovered by forensic experts show she told him to not come to her home.
After the alleged rape, Yapias “apologized for erasing the text messages” and “further acknowledged that the victim had told him ‘no,’ she did not want to have sex,” according to court documents cited by The Salt Lake Tribune. In that text exchange, the woman told Yapias she had turned down his advances, and he had responded with, “That’s fine. I accept. I am very sorry.”
Yapias is well-known inside Utah for his immigration activism. He gained some national attention for an anti-Trump rally, where he accused Trump of encouraging hate speech against immigrants and others. The GOP presidential nominee has received significant criticism from members of both parties for derogatory comments about illegal immigrants and a Mexican judge who was overseeing charges against Trump University.
The alleged rape took place in March; Yapias, who is from Peru, was charged earlier this month.
