Valentine’s Day: An Opportunity to Think About God’s Love

By Nancy Flory Published on February 14, 2018

My biggest Valentine’s Day present was a pair of genuine diamond earrings. Tiny, but real. Somewhere along the way I lost them. My best Valentine’s gift ever and they’re gone.

How fleeting human gifts can be. Flowers die, candy is eaten and greeting cards get thrown away or tucked in a box in the attic. And jewelry is lost.

But for all of my human imperfections and imperfect gifts, I appreciate the sentiments and love those who give them.

How much more does the Father, the giver of all good gifts, love me? His gifts will never wither and are new every morning. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:22-23).

Though I Sin

Talk about unconditional love. Though I sin, He pardons me over and over if I repent. “Who is a God like thee, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger for ever because he delights in steadfast love (Micah 7:18).

My Heavenly Father loves me with an unfathomable passion. “But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

While Valentine’s Day gifts will last for a few days, God’s love is never ending. “May your unfailing love be with us, Lord, even as we put our hope in you” (Ps. 33:22).
