18 Million People Have Seen These Teens Mow Lawns for Free

A mother’s punishment has turned into a summer-long project that has won four boys trips to Disney, more than $72,000 online and the affection of millions nationwide.

Since July 20, an ABC13 report on the lawn-mowing of Travis Wilson, his two brothers, and their cousin has been watched nearly 18 million times. Their GoFundMe page has raised almost $73,000 since early July. Wilson’s mother said it started with a punishment to mow neighbors’ lawns.

According to Barbara Wilson, who wrote the GoFundMe page, she and her husband are the parents and guardians for Travis, Demontae, Thomas and Alan. She writes that they are “well-mannered, respectful kids who noticed that some of their neighbors are unable to maintain their yard due to various reasons. Some are elderly and their health prevents them from working in the heat, single family homes who can’t afford the proper equipment, abandon[ed] homes that have been trashed and vandalized, especially in the west end.”

“Among other struggles in their community, this neighborhood burden and eyesore effects these kids’ outlook on poverty within their community because they are exposed to it on a daily basis,” wrote Wilson.

ABC13 reported that they have traveled across the Louisville area, knocking on doors to volunteer their time. Unfortunately, they haven’t always found success.

“Because they’re young black males, people are a little afraid to open their door,” Wilson told ABC. “They just shut the door, ‘no thank you.’ They don’t even give them a chance to tell them it’s free we want to stay out of trouble, we just want to take care of our community.”

But that hasn’t stopped the boys. Wilson says Travis’ sense of community has led to she and her husband working with an area travel agency to incentivize other teens to look beyond themselves. “We have agreed to keep track of their donated labor and give them credit towards an annual chartered trip to Disney World! A charter sponsored by Empress Excursions to show, not only our kids, but the kids in our community that there is a world out here so much bigger than ‘our hood!’”

The boys’ Facebook page, entitled “It Takes A Village, Together We Stand Strong,” has other videos, including one where they are shown how to properly maintain their equipment.

All of the boys are 14 or 15 years old, according to ABC.
